Regional Director on “The Elections We Want” in Africa
As part of its annual report, the Wilson Center Africa Program asked IFES Regional Director for Africa Rushdi Nackerdien to contribute an essay on recent African elections. With the recent conclusion of 2015, it is meaningful to reflect on the successes and lessons from last year. In a U.S. Institute for Peace address in 2015 during his visit state visit to the U.S., Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari reflected on the democratic success in his country in 2015: “the contributions of IRI [International Republican Institute], NDI [National Democratic Institute] and IFES [International Foundation for Electoral Systems] to the success of the 2015 general elections in Nigeria are well documented.

Ahead of Nigeria’s 2015 general elections, I traveled to Nigeria to witness the preparations for the vote and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems’ (IFES) support for this vitally important electoral process. IFES has been engaged with Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) since 1999, providing an array of technical assistance to support the country’s electoral and political processes.
