Analysis of the Status of Women in Burundi’s Political and Electoral Processes
Burundi is one of few countries in the world to have adopted a gender quota for its legislature in an effort to promote the inclusion and participation of women in the political process. As such, it presents an informative case study on the impact a gender quota can have as a catalyst for more progressive and inclusive governance. Given the International Foundation for Electoral System’s (IFES) commitment to gender equality and women’s participation in electoral processes and government, a thorough analysis demonstrating the effectiveness of quotas is a vital effort that aids IFES in supporting their use as a tool for democratic progress.

Burundians Vote in Communal Elections
On May 24, 2010, communal elections, the first in a series of polls that will take place in Burundi this summer, were held. This series of elections are the first to be implemented in Burundi since the rebels laid down their arms and ended years of civil war. The district elections are considered to be crucial for the consolidation of peace in the war-ravaged country. They are seen a barometer for the electoral period which will include presidential, legislative and local elections by September 2010.

Sierra Leone Votes in National Elections
Presidential and Parliamentary Elections were held in Sierra Leone on August 11, 2007. National and International Election Observers were present to monitor the vote for free and fair results. Despite bad weather, citizens arrived early, and eagerly voted within the regulated precincts.

This is a civic education poster from the 2000 Ugandan Referendum election. The poster's scene depicts many aspects of Ugandan life including meeting with friends in the market, talking with local religious figures and displaying strong social capital. The poster was aimed at creating voter efficacy around a shared sense of community in lead up to the referendum on choosing a political system for the country.

“Referendum 2000: Choosing a political System for Uganda” is a pamphlet that answers key questions related to the 2000 referendum in Uganda. The literature answers questions about registration for voting, why one should vote and address what the movement and multi-party systems will represent. The pamphlet also acknowledges that a referendum is a vote on an issue, in this case a political system, and not is geared towards electing a candidate.

Message to Registered Voters
“Message to Registered Voters,” was a one page reminder to Ugandan registered voters that their job is not over once they are registered for the 1994 general assembly elections. The flyer urges voters to attend the ongoing meetings with the local candidates and reminds them to vote in the March 28th election. The importance of making an informed vote and not just a vote is a noteworthy component of the flyer.
