Southern Sudan Registers to Vote in the Referendum
An estimated 3.9 million Southern Sudanese registered in November and December 2010 to cast a ballot in the referendum occurring between January 9-15, 2011. The SSRC has established polling centers in the north and in eight countries (Australia, Canada, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, the UK, and the USA) and the SSRB has established polling stations throughout Southern Sudan. As a key milestone of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), the referendum will determine whether Sudan remains unified or if the ten states of Southern Sudan will secede. At least 60% of those registered to vote must cast a ballot for the results to be binding.

Sudan’s First Vote After Peace Agreement
From April 11 to 15, 2010, Sudan’s citizens turned out to vote in the first nationwide election held since 1986. The election, a key milestone of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), marked the first time the vast majority of Sudanese had ever voted and served as an important opportunity for those in the south and Abyei to practice this civic duty in anticipation of the next CPA milestones: the January 2011 Referendum on Southern Sudan’s independence and Abyei Referendum. Nationally, Omar Hassan al-Bashir was re-elected as President of Sudan with 68% of the vote, and in the South, Salva Kiir Mayardit was re-elected as President of Southern Sudan with just shy of 93% of Southern Sudan’s vote.

The booklet describes the voting rights of Kazakhstani’s including universal adult suffrage. Also, there are sections on topics such as election financing and canvassing as well as the timing and place of the election.

Guide to Voters on Elections in the Republic of Kazakhstan
“Guide to Voters on Elections in the Republic of Kazakhstan” is an informative brochure, available in both Kazakh and Russian, published in 1998 by the Central Electoral Commission in Kazakhstan, in lead up to the January 10, 1999 Presidential Election in Kazakhstan. The document is a guide explaining voters some of the following election-related topics: the structure and function of the electoral system, voters’ rights and responsibilities, rules and procedures for the elections, as well as instructions on how to fill out a ballot.

The article “Policy, Politology, Student School of Leadership” written by Ivan Prokopov and translated into English discusses the significance of the creation of the Academy of Management on the campus of the Institute of Economy in Kazakhstan. Printed on May 22nd, 1996 in the Kazakhstani newspaper Kazakstanskya Pravda, Prokopov’s article emphasizes the importance of analyzing political parties and their effect on the country’s economy as well as the economy of other nations in the Commonwealth of Independent States.

How Students Elected a president
In May of 1996, Altay Kozhaev wrote this article in the New Generation, entitled “How Students Elected a President,” which discusses a political game played by Kazakh first and second graders in a local school. Kozhaev explains the game, conducted in the frame “Days of Political Science,” and continues to present the election process of these students as a serious one, emphasizing to the Kazakh people the importance of political education in Kazakh youth. This article is provided in both English and Russian.
