Advocating for Democracy
In the past few months IFES has revamped and expanded its communications and advocacy efforts and added staff to its outreach department. In the fall Jamie Dettmer, an international journalist and a communications counsel, was appointed as director of communications and advocacy. Shortly before Christmas, Laura Osio, formerly a media manager at the Washington DC-based think tank, the Cato Institute, joined IFES as its press officer. John Lawrence joined in November as manager of congressional affairs.

Curing the Curse: Revenue, Representation, and Regime in Africa
Description: Does African dependence on foreign aid undermine the evolution of representative institutions? Using cross-national data and public opinion data, Olufunmbi M. Elemo, a PhD candidate in political science at Michigan State University and a Manatt fellow, shows that as government aid dependence increases, perceptions of political efficacy and access to public services diminishes across Africa.

Instructions for Election Poll Workers
“Instructions for Election Poll Workers” was released by the St. Louis County Election Board in lead up to the August 8, 2006 primary elections. The piece provides information on how to handle voters with disability, electioneers, “challengers,” and injuries as a poll worker. The piece also provides information on what a typical schedule should be for a poll worker and a tutorial on how to use touch screen voting machines.
