The main parties in the election were the Democratic Agrarian Party of Moldova (Partidul Democrat Agrar din Moldova), the Socialist Party-Unity Movement (Blocul electoral "Partidul Socialist si Miscarea Unitate-Edinstvo"), the Bloc of Peasants and Intellectuals (Blocul Taranilor si Intelectualilor), and the Alliance of the Christian Democratic Popular Front (Blocul electoral "Alianta Frontului Popular Crestin Democrat").

The first round of the election was held on 17 November 1996 and the main candidates were Mircea SNEGUR (Party of Rebirth and Conciliation of Moldova), Petru LUCINSCHI (Independent) and Vladimir VORONIN (Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova). A second round of voting was held on 1 December.
