Violence Against Women in Elections and the Representation of Women in Haitian Politics
The reasons for women's weak representation in Haitian politics are deeply rooted in social norms and the widespread incidence of violence against women in elections (VAWE), which the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) defines as "any harm or threat of harm committed against women with the intent and/or impact of interfering with their free and equal participation in the electoral process during the electoral period." Oftentimes, VAWE is subtle and more indirect than physical attacks against voters and candidates, but it nonetheless impacts women's interest and willingness to get involved in political processes and structures of governance. The threats and social stigmas they face are associated not only with the act of voting, but with many other activities that are a common part of a free and fair democratic experience. To document the nature and impact of VAWE in Haiti, IFES has produced Violence Against Women in Elections in Haiti: An IFES Assessment.

Financing Politics: The Middle East and North Africa
Financing Politics: The Middle East and North Africa is a collaborative effort between the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) and the Arab Region Parliamentarians against Corruption (ARPAC). It represents a concerted attempt to better understand and document existing political finance regulations and experiences in five countries – Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Tunisia and Yemen. The availability of information on the funding of parties and campaigns is a first and significant step in enhancing transparency.

Understanding the Proposed Kyrgyz Parliament
On April 26, 2010, the Interim Government of Kyrgyzstan, which took control of the country following early April protests that drove former president Kurmanbek Bakiyev from office, unveiled a new draft constitution that will be finalized and officially presented on May 20. A referendum will take place in June 27 in which the population will be able to vote “yes” or “no” in favor of adopting this new charter.

Post-Earthquake Constitutional Analysis of the Interruption of the Legislative and Executive Powers in Haiti
Due to the earthquake on January 12, 2010, elections for the members of the House of Representatives and one third of the Senate scheduled for February 28 and April 4, 2010, were canceled. As a result, Haiti will have no legislative power as of May 8, 2010. There will be a rupture in the constitutional order.

Comparative Report on the State of the Judiciary in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Morocco
This report compares the overall state of the judiciary in four Arab countries: Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt and Morocco. It evaluates regional judicial independence and accountability and is based on wide-ranging research conducted by Arab experts from the region over the past two years. Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt and Morocco were selected for comparison because they have already implemented some judicial reforms and are among the most progressive in the region with respect to this issue. The experiences of these countries may provide best practices and valuable lessons learned. In addition, they may be receptive to working with civil society to deepen their reforms. This report was made possible by the financial support of UNDP-POGAR and technical support from IFES.
