Principles of democracy
The Principles of Democracy is a book written by Marc Swanepoel and published by The Free Market Foundation in South Africa in 1992. This book is written in the vernacular and complete with cartoon illustrations, investigates the meaning of democracy and the proper political framework necessary to achieve prosperity. The book also deals with the system of elections and voting in a democratic society and stresses the importance of free and fair elections as well as the protection of fundamental freedoms throughout society.

Thukela Local Government Election 29 May 1996
In preparation for the Thuleka local government elections on May 29th 1996, this newsletter was distributed in order to educate Thuleka residents to participate and vote. Information such as voting rules and instructions and functions of the offices up for election are supplemented with illustrations reinforcing this basic elections knowledge. This newsletter was published by the Institute for Democracy in Africa in 1996 and is written in both English and Zulu.

Truth Talk
This is the November 1996 edition of South Africa’s “Truth Talk,” a publication of the country’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The magazine focuses on reparations for civil rights violations of the past and includes a piece by Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu, the Commission’s chairperson. There is also a section on individuals’ reactions to the work of the Commission. A second topic of this magazine was the granting of amnesty to South African’s who had perpetrated human rights violations while under orders. This piece was published two years after the 1994 elections in South Africa, the first to feature universal adult suffrage.

Democracy's Building Blocks
In an essay entitled “Democracy’s Building Blocks,” Gail Day argues that in order for South Africa to become a democratic, peaceful, and prosperous nation, the people must first understand what makes a society peaceful and the leaders must be pressured to create such a society. Day continues to press for the need to institute new checks and balances into the South African constitution and calls on the South African people to be at the forefront of this democratic movement. This essay was published in November of 1992 by Groundswell.

Voter education: Manual for Trainers
The third edition of the South African “Voter Education: A Manual for Trainers” was published in 1994 by the Centre for Development Studies and The National Democratic Institute for International Affairs. The piece was directed at those who would be training and educating new voters on the electoral process. The manual explains voting procedure as well as election terminology and shows trainers how to run workshops geared at educating the public on those topics.
