Women’s Election and Leadership Training Program
The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) has implemented the Women’s Election and Leadership Program in several countries to develop the capacity of women to participate in the election process as election officials and to develop leadership skills among women. These programs provide a blend of technical knowledge and soft skills to enable trainees to effectively use the knowledge and skills gained in electoral roles.

On the Hill: Electoral Preparations in the Democratic Republic of Congo
On August 8, 2018, the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) announced that President Joseph Kabila will not be running during the country’s highly anticipated elections set for December 23, 2018. A week prior to the announcement, Senator Christopher Coons (D-Del.) hosted a briefing on Capitol Hill to discuss electoral preparations in the DRC.

Step by Step: Preventing Fraud in Elections
Poll workers and election observers can take a number of simple yet powerful steps to protect the integrity of the vote and promote trust in the electoral process. Together, these measures help deter and prevent fraud. These images from around the world show poll workers, observers and citizens working together to make elections transparent and credible. IFES recently released a white paper defining electoral fraud, which will further help stakeholders address this unfortunate practice.

A Week in Cambodia
IFES’ Women’s Leadership program, conducted in five provinces across Cambodia the spring of 2011, sought to increase women’s personal development and leadership skills and knowledge of the election process. During the week of 14-21 September, some of the participants joined IFES staff in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap to discuss what they have learned. This week coincided with the Pchum Ben festival, during which Cambodians pay their respect to deceased relatives, and the 2011 voter registration period, which IFES witnessed. Combating Corruption in Central Africa
IFES is working with civil society organizations in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi on two new anti-corruption projects. The projects train civil society groups and government institutions to investigate corruption, and provide forums in which citizens and politicians discuss serious issues. The end goal is to improve transparency and expose public trust violations.

DRC Election 2006: Picture Box
One of the tools used by IFES’ local trainers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo was the boîte à images, or picture box. The boîte contains 27 pictures that illustrate important concepts of democracy, free elections and civic responsibility after the polls.
