Step by Step: Preventing Fraud in Elections
Poll workers and election observers can take a number of simple yet powerful steps to protect the integrity of the vote and promote trust in the electoral process. Together, these measures help deter and prevent fraud. These images from around the world show poll workers, observers and citizens working together to make elections transparent and credible. IFES recently released a white paper defining electoral fraud, which will further help stakeholders address this unfortunate practice.

Combating Corruption in Central Africa
IFES is working with civil society organizations in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi on two new anti-corruption projects. The projects train civil society groups and government institutions to investigate corruption, and provide forums in which citizens and politicians discuss serious issues. DRC Election 2006: Picture Box
One of the tools used by IFES’ local trainers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo was the boîte à images, or picture box. The boîte contains 27 pictures that illustrate important concepts of democracy, free elections and civic responsibility after the polls.

Media Centers: Serving Democracy Through the Press
As the global leader in democracy promotion, IFES has helped election management bodies (EMBs) around the world set up media centers to facilitate the flow of information and enhance transparency in the electoral process. A media center allows EMBs, the authoritative sources of election news, to distribute real-time information to local and foreign journalists, including updates on the progress of voting and preliminary announcements of election results. For elections, independent media serve to underscore key issues, shed light on candidates and political parties, provide voter education and keep the population updated on electoral developments.

Indonesia’s April 2014 Legislative Elections
On April 9th, the world's fourth most populous nation held its fourth legislative elections since returning to democracy in 1999. Indonesia's colorful elections are the largest and most complex single day election event in the world. More than 70 percent of the 187 million registered voters cast more than half a billion ballots in nearly half a million polling stations on more than 8,000 inhabited islands. Balloting started after dawn and election officials had completed the counting process at the polling station level long before dusk, but the lengthy aggregation process means that official results will not be known until more than a month after the elections, providing a tense period for more than 200,000 candidates as fewer than ten percent of them will win.
