A Young Leader in Tunisia Looks Forward
Achref Aouadi, founder of I-Watch, a youth-based nongovernmental organization that monitors campaign finance in Tunisia, knows what it is like to live under an oppressive regime. Today, he is working to ensure that freedoms acquired through the Arab Spring continues to flourish in his country. A graduate from University of Tunis, he talks to IFES about Tunisia post-Ben Ali and what must be done to ensure that the country’s democratic gains continue to grow.

Investing in Common Aspirations: Lewis Madanick on the Former Eastern Bloc, Democracy and Humanity
Lewis Madanick, Program Manager at Open World Leadership Center, has watched Eastern Europe’s rocky to transition to democracy. A child of the Cold War and a student of Russian/Soviet history, he has a deep interest in global politics and the role of the individual in democracy. While at IFES from 1999-2000, Madanick served as Program Officer for Russia. He now works to build ties between emerging leaders in Eurasia and the United States. A week after the death of Margaret Thatcher – who recognized the first Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev as reform-oriented – Madanick comments on the march of democracy in former Eastern Bloc.

Insight into the ICC’s Investigation of Election Violence in Kenya
Earlier this month, the International Criminal Court ( ICC) arrived in Kenya to begin investigating the election violence following the December 2008 election. The bloodshed left at least 1,100 dead and over 300,000 persons displaced.
