Media Centers: Serving Democracy Through the Press
As the global leader in democracy promotion, IFES has helped election management bodies (EMBs) around the world set up media centers to facilitate the flow of information and enhance transparency in the electoral process. A media center allows EMBs, the authoritative sources of election news, to distribute real-time information to local and foreign journalists, including updates on the progress of voting and preliminary announcements of election results. For elections, independent media serve to underscore key issues, shed light on candidates and political parties, provide voter education and keep the population updated on electoral developments.

Indonesia’s April 2014 Legislative Elections
On April 9th, the world's fourth most populous nation held its fourth legislative elections since returning to democracy in 1999. Indonesia's colorful elections are the largest and most complex single day election event in the world. More than 70 percent of the 187 million registered voters cast more than half a billion ballots in nearly half a million polling stations on more than 8,000 inhabited islands. Balloting started after dawn and election officials had completed the counting process at the polling station level long before dusk, but the lengthy aggregation process means that official results will not be known until more than a month after the elections, providing a tense period for more than 200,000 candidates as fewer than ten percent of them will win.

Tunisia Reopens Media Center for Presidential Elections
On November 20, 2014, Tunisia’s High Independent Authority for Elections (ISIE) held a press conference to reopen its Media Center for the November 23 presidential election. The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) worked closely with its ISIE partners in conceptualizing and creating the Center for the October parliamentary elections and the November presidential vote. The Media Center serves as a platform for the ISIE to communicate election related information to citizens, journalists, international organizations and other relevant stakeholders. It also brings transparency and credibility to the election process. Click through this photo gallery to see the impressive and important results of this effort.
