A Snapshot of the 2013 Midterm Elections in the Philippines
The Philippines held midterm elections on May 13, 2013. These polls marked the second time a nationwide automated election system was used. In addition to fine-tuning the technology used during the election, the Philippine Commission on Elections (COMELEC) also implemented a continuous voter registration process and a general registration in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. IFES Chief of Party in the Philippines Beverly Hagerdon Thakur answers some questions on Election Day.

Investing in Common Aspirations: Lewis Madanick on the Former Eastern Bloc, Democracy and Humanity
Lewis Madanick, Program Manager at Open World Leadership Center, has watched Eastern Europe’s rocky to transition to democracy. A child of the Cold War and a student of Russian/Soviet history, he has a deep interest in global politics and the role of the individual in democracy. While at IFES from 1999-2000, Madanick served as Program Officer for Russia. He now works to build ties between emerging leaders in Eurasia and the United States. A week after the death of Margaret Thatcher – who recognized the first Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev as reform-oriented – Madanick comments on the march of democracy in former Eastern Bloc.

EVER Project Warns of Potential for New Violence
A new report from the Election Violence Education and Resolution or EVER project warns that the results of Timor-Leste’s parliamentary vote, and debate over the right to form a government, could trigger more election-related violence. The EVER team issued its second report today, indicating a 30 percent increase in election-related incidents over the first reporting period.
