Promoting Participation By Electing Youth: The London Youth Advisory Council
The London Youth Advisory Council (LYAC) of Ontario, Canada is comprised of young people who are elected to their positions by the general public. Each councilor represents a ward, or region, of the city of London, Ontario. For this episode of Dialogues on Democracy, IFES Youth Advisor Augusta Featherston spoke with Ward 4 Councilor Nicole Worozbyt and Adam Fearnall, Council Director of London Youth Advistory Council (LYAC) about the impact their council has had on their community and how some of these lessons can be expanded to new programs.

Spending Limits as a Policy Option
Citizens in many countries are upset because they believe the current financing of politics (which involves corruption and under-the-table deals) is violating the basic democratic values of equal opportunity, transparency and accountability. One way to bring the funding of political parties and candidates into line with these values is to regulate campaign expenditures through spending limits. This is a viable option, but such limits must be designed and implemented with care.

The document published by the Director General of Elections in Quebec publicizes what it has done to promote democracy, be at the service of voters, and regulate finance in elections taking place in Quebec.

Manual de Instrucciones para Miembros de Mesa Receptora de Votos
“Instructive Manual for the Members of the Polling Stations” is an informative brochure, available in Spanish, issued in 2003 by the Electoral Justice body in Paraguay in lead up to the 2003 Paraguayan General Elections. The document is meant to instruct the members of the polling stations about their rights and responsibilities during the election day. Some of the topics covered are: how to set up the polling station, opening time, closing time, preparation of the electoral documents and electoral crimes.

Programa Anticorrupcion
“Anticorruption Program” is a civic education handbook, available in Spanish, issued in 2003 in Paraguay and which exposes the objectives of the anticorruption program as well as the schedule for the main happenings. Additionally, it contains a commitment act to accomplish the provisions of the program.
