Elections in Moldova: 2020 Presidential Election

On Sunday, November 1, Moldovans will directly elect the next president for the first time since 2000 – the result of a 2016 Constitutional Court ruling. The country remains one of the poorest in Europe with minimal economic and job opportunities, challenges that have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The election will be an opportunity for voters to weigh in on a variety of domestic and geopolitical challenges and help set the country on a more certain path after a tumultuous 18 months. Out of the eight candidates, the two leading candidates are incumbent President Igor Dodon and Maia Sandu, who will likely compete in a run-off. These two candidates represent divergent geopolitical paths for Moldova.
