Regional Director on “The Elections We Want” in Africa
As part of its annual report, the Wilson Center Africa Program asked IFES Regional Director for Africa Rushdi Nackerdien to contribute an essay on recent African elections. His piece, “The Elections We Want,” covered 2017 elections in Angola, Rwanda, Liberia, Senegal, the Gambia, and Kenya, and their implications for election practitioners moving forward.

Combating Corruption in Central Africa
IFES is working with civil society organizations in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi on two new anti-corruption projects. The projects train civil society groups and government institutions to investigate corruption, and provide forums in which citizens and politicians discuss serious issues. The end goal is to improve transparency and expose public trust violations.

National Elections Manual
The “National Elections Manual” is a booklet that was released in the year 2000 and is broken into two parts, one on civic education and one on voter education. The section on civic education defines citizenship, outlines the branches of the Ugandan government and discusses the link between the constitution and the people. Section two on voter education focuses on the registration of voters, the nomination of candidates the process of voting.

Challenges for Citizens
“Challenges for Citizens” is a booklet published in lead up to the 2000 Ugandan referendum. The literature urges citizens to take part in the electoral process by voting but also cautions that more work after the referendum will be needed to insure a fully functioning and free society. The piece also details the contents of the Ugandan Constitution and focuses on how a democratic state to function. Throughout the article Ugandans are urged to take an active role in their country’s democracy and electoral process.

Democracy Your handbook
“Democracy Your handbook” was published in 2000 by MS Uganda, the same year as a national referendum to decide the political system of the country. The audience of this handbook was the general Ugandan population and its objective was to proffer a new way of looking at democracy. The booklet defines democracy as not only a means of governance but also as a way to interact with your neighbors, family and friends. The booklet focuses on topics such as family values, community cohesion and organizing as well as government transparency as important pieces to a sound democracy.
