IFES’ 2013 Charles T. Manatt Democracy Awards
IFES marked its’ annual Charles T. Manatt Democracy Awards with a gala dinner ceremony at the Grand Hyatt Washington in Washington, D.C., on September 24. This award underscores IFES’ belief that advancing good governance and democratic rights begins with empowerment of and active participation from citizens.
Each year, three honorees who are united by this belief gather with IFES friends and colleagues to celebrate democracy. This annual event brings together a diverse group of leaders, including ambassadors, government officials and business executives.

The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) will honor the head of Mexico’s Federal Electoral Institute (IFE) with its 2013 Charles T. Manatt Democracy Award. IFE President Leonardo Valdés Zurita will receive the award on September 24, 2013 at a gala dinner in Washington, DC. Snapshot of Georgia’s 2013 Parliamentary By-Elections
On April 27, 2013, Georgia held by-elections in the districts of Nadzaladevi, Baghdati and Samtredia to fill three majoritarian seats. These seats opened following political appointments made after the October 2012 parliamentary elections. Eleven candidates in Nadzaladevi, eight in Baghdati and five in Samtredia registered as participants for the by-elections. According to Georgia’s Central Election Commission (CEC), the district of Nadzaladevi in Tbilisi has 140,000 voters, making it the third largest district in Georgia. The districts of Samtredia and Baghdati in the Imereti region have 48,000 and 24,000 voters, respectively. The images below provide an inside look at Election Day.
