India’s 37 Million “Missing Women”
As part of its U.S. Agency for International Development-funded Women’s Legal Rights Initiative in India, IFES launched the “Dignity of the Girl Child” campaign to address sex selection, infanticide and neglect of the girl-child. IFES’ campaign combined research and advocacy with targeted community-based interventions to sensitize and mobilize district and local administrators, the legal community, civil society, and the public on the need to value the life of the girl-child. It also engaged men as program allies and key decision makers.

Photo Gallery: IFES 2016 Photography Contest Winner and Finalists
An image of a person with a disability in India on his way to vote with the assistance of his son was selected as the Grand Prize winner in the International Foundation for Electoral Systems’ (IFES) 2016 Photography Contest. A photo of eager citizens in queue to obtain their citizenship cards and enroll on the Election Commission of Nepal's voter register at a mobile camp in Kailali district, Nepal was selected as the IFES Choice winner of the Photography Contest.

Dignity for Indian Girls
Female feticide, infanticide and neglect of girls has been widely practiced in India with alarming implications on the rate of missing girls. By 2005, India’s ratio of girls to boys had declined so steeply that there were fewer than 900 Indian girls born for every 1,000 boys – one of the lowest rates worldwide.

Elections for All: Empowering the Underrepresented
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights guarantees all individuals the freedom to partake in their nation’s government and political processes, including elections. Yet, many individuals around the world face barriers to full participation due to social, ethnic and economic inequalities. IFES’ programs empower these underrepresented populations to participate in political life in a variety of ways. This photo gallery provides some examples of our work in this area.

U.S. Ambassador for Women’s Issues Visits IFES’ Garima Project in India
On September 14, 2010, U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues Melanne S. Verveer visited the Garima project in New Delhi, India. Verveer helped launch the Garima project in November 2009 and returned to observe its progress during a recent visit to India. Garima, which means “dignity” in Hindi, works to enhance women’s participation in political, economic and social processes, encourage political advocacy, and curb practices such as gender-based violence, female feticide and child marriage. The project is implemented by IFES and Counterpart International and collaborates with several nongovernmental organizations in India.

Campaign Fuels Support for Indian Girls
Motorists in Jaipur, India received more than petrol when they visited Indian Oil Company stations in late October. IFES, the oil company and local nongovernmental organizations sponsored a campaign to educate people about the dignity of the girl child and the negative consequences of female feticide.

Democracy, Economy and Gender In Uganda: A Report of a National Sample Survey
In the run-up to Uganda's referendum of June 2000, a national survey was conducted of a representative cross-section of 2271 adult Ugandan citizens. The survey covered all four regions of the country (northern, eastern, central and western), including 36 of the 45 administrative districts. The purpose of the survey was to assess popular attitudes to democracy, economy, civil society and gender.

Women and the Referedum
“Women and the Referendum” is a booklet that was published in 2000 in lead up to the June 2nd and 3rd referendum in Uganda. The document enumerates the alternatives on the ballot and urges women to take part in the upcoming election. The hand book was geared at aiding civic educators engage women in the political process and also indicates what women’s role in democracy can be and what they have to gain from political participation.

Women's Demands are Valid for the Development of Uganda and its Plans to Eradicate Poverty
This document lists women’s rights issues and requests that they be considered for the year 2000 Ugandan referendum. The issues include land ownership, physical abuse, and the formation of an equal opportunities commission that will redress the historical and cultural injustices that have truncated women’s prosperity in Uganda. Also included is a section that lists the legal claims women have under that constitution. This includes a provision that dismisses sex based discrimination.

Join Us in Campaigning for a Just Domestic Relations Law
“Join Us in Campaigning for a Just Domestic Relations Law” is a pamphlet that was published in September of 1999 by the Ugandan Women’s Network. The pamphlet outlines the “Domestic Rights Bill,” a bill that was aimed at creating a more equitable legal status for women and in doing so create more stability in the household. Specifically the bill advocated for defining adultery as gender neutral, cementing the age one can consent to marriage at 18 years and recognizing that mental and physiological violence can be considered grounds for divorce.
