Giving a Voice to Tunisia’s Voiceless Citizens
The upcoming May 6 municipal elections in Tunisia will mark the first time citizens will democratically elect their local leaders and launch the decentralization process in the country. IFES employed a multi-pronged, nationwide, interactive voter education campaign – primarily targeting rural and traditionally marginalized voters – that reached six million voters during the voter registration period in 2017.

Photo Gallery: Voters in 32 Districts Cast Votes in Nepal’s Historic Elections
On November 26, 2017, Nepal held the first phase of its first national and state-level legislature elections since the promulgation of its new constitution on September 20, 2015. Voters headed to one of 2,919 polling locations across 32 districts in the hill and mountain regions of Nepal, with the remaining 45 districts preparing to vote on December 7. These districts represented 3,191,945 of the 15,427,938 total registered voters. These elections mark an important step in Nepal’s transition to a federal state.

On November 7, 2017, IFES Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa Zeinab Abdelkarim provided testimony to the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa. She was invited to speak to Members of Congress about “Democracy and Governance in the Middle East and North Africa,” in particular about impediments to reforms and what Congress and the administration can do to better achieve democracy and governance goals in the region.

Survey Reveals Illiterate Tunisians Plan to Participate in Upcoming Elections
An IFES quantitative survey, conducted from December 2016 to January 2017, aimed to gain a better understanding of illiterate Tunisians’ levels of political participation and civic engagement and identify obstacles preventing or discouraging them from voting. This information will inform the design of outreach campaigns aimed at increasing illiterate Tunisians’ understanding of political and electoral processes, as well as more targeted voter information campaigns to encourage illiterate Tunisians to register and participate in elections.
