Public Opinion of Democracy Issues in Kosovo: Findings from an IFES August 2012 Survey
From August 17-29, 2012, IFES partner Index Kosova conducted fieldwork and data processing to determine public opinion in Kosovo. The survey covered a sample size of 1,520 Kosovars and aimed to understand the adult population’s knowledge of key components of the election process; measure awareness on current electoral reform processes; analyze attitudes toward political participation; and measure citizen’s perceptions of the Central Election Commission.

Kosovo Civic Education Campaign
In the fall of 2012, IFES collaborated with six local partners in Kosovo to launch “Participate,” a civic education campaign aimed at increasing public awareness on democratic values. This includes independent voting; the role of women, youth and minority groups in election processes; roles and responsibilities of election management bodies; and electoral complaints. The campaign reached 33,883 voters through face-to-face activities; distributed 87,482 informational brochures, pamphlets and other printed material; and reached over 600,000 Kosovars through TV and radio programs, as well as newspaper articles. Ensuring the Rights and Voices of Nigeriens: Photos from the Natural Resources Industry
It is important that Nigeriens have a voice in the way resources from their country are used. Genuine and transparent citizen participation is vital to the African nation’s economic development and security.
Although there has been a new wave of participation, challenges remain. IFES is currently working with civil society organizations (CSO) and the Nigerien government to increase awareness of the risks and rights of those in the extractive resources industry. This gallery is a collection of photos taken throughout Niger as IFES and CSOs host outreach activities, such as concerts, street theater and radio campaigns.

Citizen Participation in Natural Resource Management in Niger
It is critical to the security and economic development of Niger that citizens' voices are heard. IFES is working with local partners to increase awareness of the risks and rights of workers in the extractive resources industry, including uranium, oil and gold. Liberians Vote in Great Numbers
On 11 October, Liberia held its second election since the conclusion of the bloody civil war that lasted from 1999 to 2003. The first round of the presidential election featured 16 candidates, including incumbent President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. IFES staff visited a number of polling stations.

Conversations and Films: Voter Education Efforts in Liberia
In an effort to increase awareness and knowledge on the 23 August constitutional referendum that was held in Liberia, IFES and 18 civil society organizations (CSOs) launched an extensive civic and voter education campaign. Posters were placed throughout Liberian towns and villages, outreach was performed for individuals across the country and a mobile cinema featuring a film on the changes that would be implemented by the referendum went on tour.
