Elections in Kosovo: 2017 Parliamentary Elections
Kosovo will hold extraordinary elections on June 11 to fill the 120 seats in the Assembly of Kosovo. While the next parliamentary election was scheduled for mid-2018, the Assembly adopted a no-confidence vote in the government of Prime Minister Isa Mustafa on May 10, 2017, triggering an early election. After consultations with the various political parties, President Hashim Thaçi announced that the elections would take place on June 11.

IFES Elects Three New Members to its Board of Directors
IFES is pleased to announce the election of Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio), Foley & Lardner LLP Partner Cleta Mitchell and foreign policy expert Rodney Bent to its Board of Directors. “Senator Portman, Ms. Mitchell and Mr. Bent join the IFES Board at a time of great uncertainty in the democracy promotion space. On March 16, 2017, International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) President & CEO Bill Sweeney presented a copy of the book First Universal Democratic Elections in Independent Georgia to Georgian Ambassador David Bakradze during a reception at the Georgian Embassy in Washington, D.C. welcoming him to his new posting.

IFES Elects New Bipartisan Board Leadership, Recognizes Departing Board Members and Welcomes New Members
IFES today announced the election of the Hon. J. Kenneth Blackwell as chairman of its Board of Directors. Donald R. Sweitzer, the previous chairman of the Board, was elected as co-chairman. Amb. Blackwell, a Republican, and Sweitzer, a Democrat, will lead the IFES Board of Directors in an expression of the Board’s bipartisan nature. The Board also elected William J. Hybl, a Republican and former IFES chairman, and the Hon. Barbara B. Kennelly, a Democrat who has been an IFES Board member since 2003, as vice-chairs; June Langston DeHart as treasurer; and Thomas A. Devine as secretary.

IFES Kosovo Works to Engage Youth in Political and Electoral Processes
To increase youth participation in, and awareness of, political and electoral issues in Kosovo, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) implemented an intensive program, which included mock debates, election simulations, and meetings with political entities. The information from these reports will be used by Kosovo’s Central Election Commission and civil society organizations to develop their public outreach strategies and to identify which groups of voters will need more effective targeting and motivation.

IFES Kosovo Promotes Inclusive Elections
The “Manual for Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in Electoral and Political Processes” provides information on ways of including persons with disabilities in the electoral process and political sector in Kosovo. The “Leaflet for Disability Access Criteria” provides examples of the legally required specifications to ensure equal access for persons with disabilities.
