Burundi Launches First-ever Election Violence Monitoring System
Amatora Mu Mahoro (Elections in Peace), Burundi's first-ever nationwide election violence prevention system, launches today in the capital, Bujumbura. The system identifies areas susceptible to electoral violence as well as successful peace initiatives around the country. It aims to support appropriate responses and promote the peaceful holding of Burundi's 2010 elections, the first since all rebel movements laid down their arms and officially ended Burundi's long civil war.

BRIDGE Training in Burundi
IFES-Burundi held the second in a series of BRIDGE trainings in Rutana, Burundi from April 6-9. The event brought together twenty-five members of Burundi's national and provincial electoral commission to explore topics critical to effectively prevent and manage electoral disputes. Burundi is scheduled to have communal, presidential, legislative and local elections between May and September 2010.

Democracy and Election in Africa: Almami Cyllah's Testimony to Congress
On Wednesday, March 24, 2010, Almami Cyllah, IFES regional director for Africa, testified before the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa and Global Health on democracy in the African continent. Mr. Cyllah gave an overview of Africa's history with elections and how democracy fits into the continent's overall advancement. He also gave a number of important recommendations for how the United States and the international community can help Africa prosper by strengthening its democratic institutions. Images from IFES-Indonesia Photo Contest Celebrating Acehs Political Participation
In support of Aceh's Independent Election Commission's (KIP) media center activities, IFES-Indonesia commissioned a photo competition to highlight some of the remarkable moments seen during the first elections where Acehnese political parties participated alongside national parties in local legislative elections. These elections were held in April 2009. The entries are from photojournalists, citizens and observers. The panel of judges consisted of a KIP Commissioner, IFES staff and a professional Jakarta based photojournalist. The award ceremony was a widely covered event by Aceh's print and TV media.
