Before conducting the SWMENA survey, NGOs in Yemen that work on several aspects of women’s issues completed a short survey to identify their data needs. One of the main challenges identified by these groups is the stereotypical view of women’s image in Yemen in terms of their role in family and society.

Transition at a Crossroads: Moving Beyond the GCC Agreement in Yemen
In late 2011, Yemeni political leaders and stakeholders endorsed the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Agreement, which laid out a two-year roadmap for resolving Yemen's political paralysis. The agreement scripted a process with an inclusive National Dialogue, a new constitution, a constitutional referendum and national elections to move the country forward. Two years later, it is likely the initial timeframe will expire without a referendum and without elections. Media Centers: Serving Democracy Through the Press
As the global leader in democracy promotion, IFES has helped election management bodies (EMBs) around the world set up media centers to facilitate the flow of information and enhance transparency in the electoral process. A media center allows EMBs, the authoritative sources of election news, to distribute real-time information to local and foreign journalists, including updates on the progress of voting and preliminary announcements of election results. For elections, independent media serve to underscore key issues, shed light on candidates and political parties, provide voter education and keep the population updated on electoral developments.

IFES Hosts Capacity-Building Workshop For Yemens Women Department
The Women's Department within Yemen's Supreme Commission for Elections and Referendum (SCER) was established in 2005 to encourage access for women to all stages of the electoral process. IFES-Yemen is helping to strengthen the capacity of the SCER Women’s Department, the first of its kind in the region, to achieve its mandate by providing training workshops. These images were taken during the four workshops that addressed topics such as budgeting and proposal writing, organizational management skills, communicating issues of gender, and developing materials to promote women's electoral participation.
