Preventing and Mitigating Electoral Violence in Guatemala
The ability for people to participate in elections free from the fear of harm is essential to inclusive, credible elections and protected by the right to human security and universal suffrage. In Central America, and more particularly in Guatemala, this freedom of fear has not been a reality for many citizens. To help address this problem, IFES has been providing technical support to the Guatemalan Supreme Electoral Tribunal on electoral violence prevention and response coordination since 2011.

Partnership with Libyan Ministry of Education to Promote Civic Education in Public Schools
On August 4, 2018, IFES and the Libyan Ministry of Education (MoE) celebrated the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at underpinning future cooperation in Libya. The MoU is the latest culmination of a fruitful cooperation between IFES and the MoE toward developing and introducing a broad curriculum of civic education in public schools in Libya.

Women’s Political Participation in Libya: Progress and Pitfalls
It is crucial that women’s voices are heard as Libya codifies human rights in national legislation and establishes government institutions. This panel centers on the current situation in Libya for women as leaders, advocates and active participants in the country’s transition. Speakers highlight IFES’ 2013 Libya Status of Women Survey, which reveals public opinion of women’s political and economic standing; first-hand experiences; and success stories about increasing women’s engagement.

Libya Pilots New Civic Education Curriculum for Students
From March 1 to 4, IFES worked with Libya’s Ministry of Education to train more than 30 Libyan teachers across the country to use and implement a new civic education curriculum for students in grades 7-9. In April, the pilot was successfully launched in 25 schools in 14 cities across Libya, and a nation-wide rollout is anticipated for the 2018/9 school year.

New Documentary Highlights Disability Rights Advocacy in Libya
On February 7, IFES launched a documentary that highlights successful disability rights advocacy in Libya and the “Rights Unite” campaign. The documentary – which was made possible through the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) – explores how the Election Access Working Group, which was established with the support of IFES and USAID in 2013, began as a fragmented group of disability rights advocates and flourished as a successful advocacy group.
