Registering Marginalized Populations to Vote in Nepal
As Nepal undergoes critical electoral and governance changes, IFES Nepal is working with local partners to register Nepalis – including Dalits, youth, Muslim women, freed Kamaiya (those subjected to forced labor) and other historically marginalized groups – to vote. IFES Disability Rights Programming Receives Innovative Practice Awards
On February 25, 2015, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems’ (IFES) disability rights programming received two Innovative Practice Awards from the Zero Project at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in Vienna. IFES’ global approach to inclusion was highlighted along with a specific accolade for IFES Nepal’s work to include people with disabilities in local governance structures. Virginia Atkinson, IFES Access and Inclusion Specialist, and Suraj Sigdel, IFES Nepal Project Officer, accepted the awards.

European Parliament Recognizes IFES Leadership on Electoral Access for Disabled
WASHINGTON, D.C. - On January 15, 2003, the European Parliament unanimously passed a resolution on the status of basic human rights in the European Union, in which it recognized the role of IFES in promoting the electoral rights of citizens with disabilities and called on member states to ensure universal application of these rights. The non-binding resolution is produced annually to report on compliance with the European Charter of Fundamental Rights.
