The Effect of Violence on Women’s Electoral and Political Participation in Bangladesh
Women in Bangladesh are uniquely impacted by pervasive violence in the country’s electoral process. To explore the effect of electoral violence on women’s participation, IFES convened seven focus groups of Bangladeshi women in 2013 and 2015 to discuss electoral violence they have experienced in the home and public sphere. The findings seek to contribute to a more holistic and human-centered approach to electoral security that covers all phases and activities of the electoral process and adheres to the spirit of international standards and norms governing elections.

Preparing for the May 13, 2013 Elections in the Philippines
The Philippines is holding midterm elections on May 13, 2013. The polls are significant as they will be the second time the Philippines uses a nationwide automated election system and the midterm elections are largely considered to provide insight into the upcoming 2016 general elections. After years of planning, including a continuous voter registration process and a general registration in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, the Philippine Election Commission (COMELEC) will serve approximately 52 million registered voters on Election Day. These images provide insight into the many preparations that took place ahead of the polls.

Ahead of May 13 Polls, Testing Election Technology in the Philippines
The Philippine Election Commission (COMELEC) recently finished final testing and sealing of the precinct count optical scanners (PCOS) – a week before local and national elections on May 13. This exercise was conducted by almost 78,000 sets of polling officials nationwide.Testing and sealing is an important step before PCOS machines can be determined ready for use on Election Day. IFES staff visited a polling center at the University of the Philippines Integrated School in Quezon City to watch the testing and sealing proceedings. The voting center supervisor directed all officials to conduct their testing in the school’s social hall. The photo gallery captures the testing exercise.

Pre-Election Technical Assessment: Republic of Bangladesh, September 2000
This pre-election technical assessment regarding the October 2001 parliamentary elections in Bangladesh details the IFES team's aim to identify interventions that could build confidence and possibly create inducements for the opposition to reengage in the election process. With the above objectives in mind, the report discusses IFES development of a number of proposals centered on building public confidence, and promoting transparency and inclusiveness in the administration of the election process. “Pastoral Exhortation of Philippine Politics” is a pastoral letter from September 16, 1997, which addresses the unequal and ‘hurtful’ way in which Philippine politics are conducted. The document, published by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, urges citizens of the Philippines to vote more intelligently, choosing candidates with integrity who will not cheat the people given the chance.
