Regional Director on “The Elections We Want” in Africa

IFES Statement on the Crisis in Venezuela
IFES is deeply troubled by the continuing political and economic crises in Venezuela and the effort by Nicolas Maduro’s regime to legitimize its authoritarianism through the ballot box. The July 30 election for a new Constituent Assembly was rife with fraud and undemocratic practices and we condemn the vote.

Civic education programs proliferated in the past few decades based on a strong belief that successful democratic consolidations require a strong and independent civil society that can mobilize and inform citizens who can then engage more effectively in politics, advocate on behalf of their own interests and hold their leaders accountable. Do these civic education programs really work?
