Regional Director on “The Elections We Want” in Africa
As part of its annual report, the Wilson Center Africa Program asked IFES Regional Director for Africa Rushdi Nackerdien to contribute an essay on recent African elections. His piece, “The Elections We Want,” covered 2017 elections in Angola, Rwanda, Liberia, Senegal, the Gambia, and Kenya, and their implications for election practitioners moving forward.

Election Administration and Management BRIDGE Training Builds Internal Capacity
In order to achieve effective and professional election management, election administrators’ capacity must be continually prioritized and developed. From August 30-31, 2017, IFES Building Resources in Democracy, Governance and Elections (BRIDGE) facilitators implemented an “Election Administration and Management” workshop for 20 attendees. The first day of the workshop focused primarily on the functions, structures, roles, and responsibilities of election management bodies, while the second day drilled down into a more detailed discussion of related election administration and management topics.

Vice President of Programs Testifies on Capitol Hill on Upcoming Elections in Latin America
On January 10, 2018, IFES Vice President of Programs Michael Svetlik provided testimony to the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere. He was invited to speak to Members of Congress about “Upcoming Elections in the Western Hemisphere: Implications for U.S. Policy,” in particular about the strengths of electoral institutions in the region and assistance provided by the U.S. government.

MoU with ICJ Signed to Strengthen Electoral Rights in Africa
IFES and the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in December to further collaboration toward improving the prevention and resolution of violations of electoral rights on the African continent and beyond. Collaboration between IFES and the ICJ will work towards the development of a reservoir of electoral jurisprudence from the African continent and the establishment a regional electoral jurisprudence network of judges, arbiters and practitioners to facilitate peer-to-peer knowledge exchange and professional support among election arbiters.

Violence Against Women in the Workplace: A Conversation on Capitol Hill
On November 15, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Tex.) and IFES organized a briefing to discuss violence against women in the workplace on Capitol Hill. Taking a cross-cutting perspective on the topic, the event explored diverse workplaces – from wealthy and powerful workplaces in Hollywood and in Congress, to low-income factory and agricultural workers around the United States and the developing world. The event also looked at VAW in the workplace across global regions, ethnic, religious and racial lines. The next briefing will take place on January 17, 2018, discussing “Ending Harmful Practices.”

She was invited to speak to Members of Congress about “Democracy and Governance in the Middle East and North Africa,” in particular about impediments to reforms and what Congress and the administration can do to better achieve democracy and governance goals in the region.
