Guatemala’s Supreme Electoral Tribunal and USAID Formalize Cooperation on Electoral Processes
On March 26, Guatemala’s Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) signed a letter of understanding (LoU) with USAID to formalize their cooperation through the Consortium for Elections and Political Process Strengthening “Electoral Governance and Reforms Program.” IFES worked with USAID and the TSE to finalize the LoU draft prior to the ceremony.

Regional Director on “The Elections We Want” in Africa
As part of its annual report, the Wilson Center Africa Program asked IFES Regional Director for Africa Rushdi Nackerdien to contribute an essay on recent African elections. His piece, “The Elections We Want,” covered 2017 elections in Angola, Rwanda, Liberia, Senegal, the Gambia, and Kenya, and their implications for election practitioners moving forward.

Combating Corruption in Central Africa
IFES is working with civil society organizations in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi on two new anti-corruption projects. The projects train civil society groups and government institutions to investigate corruption, and provide forums in which citizens and politicians discuss serious issues. The end goal is to improve transparency and expose public trust violations.

Reflechissez et Devenez Electeur Conscient
“Réfléchissez et Devenez Electeur Conscient” is a report from 1998, available in French, which details a step by step approach to making the Democratic Republic of Congo a truly democratic country with respect for the rights of citizens and free and fair elections. The document, published by LICE (Ligue de Conscientisation des Electeurs), refers to an African crisis of political under-development that must urgently be addressed.
