Laying the Groundwork for Electoral Justice in Ethiopia
Election disputes are a natural outgrowth of the electoral process, and having mechanisms to properly and fairly consider those disputes is vital to electoral integrity. The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) is working to instill those mechanisms in Ethiopia, where elections are set for June 5, 2021, and the stakes are high amid an atmosphere of ethno-political tension and conflict and fierce electoral competition.

Ethiopia Holds Referendum to Determine Statehood for Sidama Zone
Residents of Ethiopia's Sidama Zone voted in a referendum for regional autonomy on November 20. With results demonstrating that approximately 98.5 percent voted in support of statehood, Sidama will be the first new state since the establishment of the current nine-state federation in the 1990s.

Elections on Trial Project: Inaugural Meeting of the Africa Electoral Jurisprudence Working Group
IFES is working to establish regional peer networks of election arbiters, which allow judges and election commissioners to discuss best practices and share comparative examples of how other countries deal with specific categories of complaints and disputes. Following the inaugural meeting of the Europe and Eurasia Electoral Jurisprudence Network in Lithuania last year, the pilot Africa network event took place in South Africa on April 16-17.

Ending Impunity for Violence Against Women in Elections in Zimbabwe
Earlier this year, IFES research in Zimbabwe found that women engaging in elections as candidates, voters and journalists were experiencing devastating sexual extortion, physical violence, harassment and intimidation from their bosses, colleagues, religious leaders and domestic partners, both in physical and online forms. In response, IFES and local Zimbabwean partners launched an initiative to end impunity for violence against women in elections.
