Remembering Kalle Könkkölä, Finnish Politician and Disability Rights Advocate
IFES is saddened by the passing of Finnish politician and disability rights advocate Kalle Könkkölä on September 11. He served from 1983 to 1987 as the first member of the Finnish Parliament with a disability, developing key pieces of legislation on disability inclusion and independent living.

IFES Signs Global Disability Summit Charter for Change
On July 24, the United Kingdom Department for International Development, the International Disability Alliance and the Government of Kenya will host the first-ever Global Disability Summit. IFES, represented by IFES President Bill Sweeney, will participate and has signed the Charter for Change, the summit’s principal legacy document outlining actions that must be taken to ensure the rights, freedoms, dignity and inclusion for all persons with disabilities.

Mobile Radio Station Reaches Half a Million Tunisian Voters
With support from the U.S.-Middle East Partnership Initiative, in 2017 IFES built a mobile radio station ahead of Tunisia’s municipal elections on May 6, 2018, and drove it up and down the length of Tunisia, broadcasting radio programs on elections in remote and hard-to-access areas.

Lagos Develops First State Electoral Commission Strategic Plan in Nigeria
The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) manages local elections within 20 local government areas in Nigeria, serving over 6 million registered voters, the most of any state in the country. With IFES support, LASIEC is developing a five-year strategic plan to address gaps in its capacity to deliver on its mandate.

Haythem Srihi: From H4D Participant to Municipal Councilor
IFES launched an original initiative called Hack4Democracy (H4D), a combination of democracy camps and hackathons which uses technology to engage Tunisian youth in civic activism. At just 24 years old, Haythem Srihi is a member of the H4D finale’s winning team and a newly elected municipal councilor from the city of Jammel. Haythem’s success in both the H4D competition and in the May 6 municipal elections serves as a prime example of what Tunisian youth can achieve when they are given the tools to prosper and have the drive to overcome societal barriers.

Bilel Mansouri: From H4D Participant to Change Maker
