IFES Conducts First CRPD Training with Georgian Public Defender’s Office
Persons with disabilities around the world encounter barriers to their political participation, and countries like Georgia are taking steps toward more inclusive policies and practices. In December 2013, Georgia ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), which calls on states to recognize the rights of persons with disabilities and to adopt appropriate measures to ensure that those rights are fully enjoyed.

For Deaf Libyans, language barriers are a profound challenge to full participation in political life. In Libyan elections – as in many elections worldwide – speeches, voting materials and other essential electoral information are not translated into sign language. Roundtable held in Cairo on New Disability and Elections BRIDGE Module
The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) organized a roundtable in Cairo, Egypt as part of the development of the Building Resources in Democracy, Governance, and Elections (BRIDGE) training program. The new disability rights module is being developed along with IFES teams in Haiti and Indonesia. The session focused on identifying key issues regarding inclusion of people with disabilities in the electoral process. Participants from various disabled persons’ organizations (DPOs) in Egypt discussed ideas with IFES staff and curriculum developers.
