IFES Assists Youth “Superchangers” in Kosovo Amplify their Voices
Recent studies have identified the alienation of Kosovo youth from electoral, political and governance processes as a potential threat to the peaceful development of a unified society, and the basis for extremism and potential radicalization of youth by clerics and political interest groups. In light of these findings, IFES implemented a year-long program focused on youth engagement throughout Kosovo to help mitigate some of these issues.

IFES Assists Kosovo with First-Ever Parliamentary Elections Since Independence
In cooperation with the Central Election Commission of Kosovo, IFES administered 14 alternative polling stations during the parliamentary elections on December 12, 2010. The parliamentary elections were Kosovo’s first since declaring independence from Serbia in 2008. The alternative polling stations were positioned in northern Kosovo where the Election Commission experienced difficulty recruiting for and opening regular polling centers. IFES arranged international teams of poll workers to staff the stations and help ensure proper handling of election materials before the votes were counted.

Voter Education in Kosovo
IFES organized a massive public information campaign to educate Kosovo voters about recent changes to their electoral system and voting procedures. On election day, voters cast their ballots in less than half the time that election authorities predicted.

Kosovo Civic Education Campaign
In the fall of 2012, IFES collaborated with six local partners in Kosovo to launch “Participate,” a civic education campaign aimed at increasing public awareness on democratic values. This includes independent voting; the role of women, youth and minority groups in election processes; roles and responsibilities of election management bodies; and electoral complaints. The campaign reached 33,883 voters through face-to-face activities; distributed 87,482 informational brochures, pamphlets and other printed material; and reached over 600,000 Kosovars through TV and radio programs, as well as newspaper articles. Lebanon 2010 Election Preparation
On 9th May 2010 Lebanon held elections across the muhafaza of Bekaa and Beirut. IFES worked with Ministry of Interior and Municipalities to ensure all electoral staff had uniforms, accreditation badges, polling manuals and displayed informational posters.
