On October 15, Macedonians will vote for mayors and municipal councilors in the country’s 80 municipalities and the City of Skopje. If needed, second-round elections will be held on October 29, 2017.

Mayors are elected through a majoritarian system, in two rounds. A candidate must receive more than 50 percent of the votes to be elected in the first round. For the election to be valid, one-third of registered voters must turn out for the first round. Municipal councilors are elected under the proportional representation system with closed lists in each municipality.
