IFES Staff Lead International Republican Institute Workshop for Political Parties

Published

On August 12 and 13, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems’ (IFES) Chief of Party for Jordan, Hermann Thiel, facilitated a workshop on electoral systems for Jordanian political parties, organized by the International Republican Institute (IRI), IFES’ partner in USAID’s Consortium for Elections and Political Processes (CEPPS). IFES Jordan Deputy Chief of Party Sara Utaibi and IFES Outreach Specialist Naser Ramadin co-facilitated the workshop.

Over the course of the workshop, representatives from 21 Jordanian political parties were engaged in a discussion about the various types of electoral systems that have been used in Jordan as well as those used around the world. The workshop aimed to strengthen the parties’ ability to productively participate in the electoral law reform process currently underway and is a strong example of CEPPS partners pooling their resources and knowledge to strengthen the democratic process in Jordan.

Several parties expressed the desire to participate in further discussions on proposed electoral systems for Jordan. IFES and IRI plan to facilitate similar conversations in the future.
