Addressing Violence Against Women in Politics
On Wednesday, May 16, IFES and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Tex.) co-hosted a briefing to discuss global legislation that specifically addresses violence against women in politics (VAWIP), personal experiences from women that have been impacted by VAWIP, existing legislation to address VAWIP and recommendations for future legislation. The U.S. Civil Society Working Group’s new policy brief on VAWIP – co-authored by IFES Senior Gender Specialist Dr. Gabrielle Bardall and Alliance for Peacebuilding Research Associate Emily Myers – was launched at this event.

IFES Statement on the Passing of Bunny White and Fred Furth
The Board of Directors and staff of IFES mourn the passing of Gladys “Bunny” B. White, wife of the late IFES founder Clifton “Clif” White, on May 5, 2018, at the age of 102, and of IFES Board Member Frederick “Fred” P. Furth on May 12, 2018, at the age of 84.

Libya Pilots New Civic Education Curriculum for Students
From March 1 to 4, IFES worked with Libya’s Ministry of Education to train more than 30 Libyan teachers across the country to use and implement a new civic education curriculum for students in grades 7-9. In April, the pilot was successfully launched in 25 schools in 14 cities across Libya, and a nation-wide rollout is anticipated for the 2018/9 school year.

IFES Chairman Submits Written Congressional Testimony on “Electoral Assistance: A Cost-Effective Investment in a More Stable, Prosperous World”
Chairman of the IFES Board Ken Blackwell submitted a written testimony to the House Committee on Appropriations’ Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs for inclusion in the record on “Electoral Assistance: A Cost-Effective Investment in a More Stable, Prosperous World.” Blackwell urged the subcommittee and the U.S. Congress to continue its tradition of bipartisan support for democracy, rights and governance.

Survey Reveals Libyans Eager to Participate in Elections, Worried about their Country’s Situation
In 2017, IFES – with the support of USAID – conducted a nationwide household survey in Libya on citizens’ intentions to vote and engage in future electoral events in the Libyan transition. The survey findings are currently being used to identify priorities and enable IFES, the High National Elections Commission (HNEC), and other national and international stakeholders to more effectively increase public knowledge of, and engagement in, Libyan political and electoral processes.

New Documentary Highlights Disability Rights Advocacy in Libya
On February 7, IFES launched a documentary that highlights successful disability rights advocacy in Libya and the “Rights Unite” campaign. The documentary – which was made possible through the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) – explores how the Election Access Working Group, which was established with the support of IFES and USAID in 2013, began as a fragmented group of disability rights advocates and flourished as a successful advocacy group.

Election Administration and Management BRIDGE Training Builds Internal Capacity
In order to achieve effective and professional election management, election administrators’ capacity must be continually prioritized and developed. From August 30-31, 2017, IFES Building Resources in Democracy, Governance and Elections (BRIDGE) facilitators implemented an “Election Administration and Management” workshop for 20 attendees. The first day of the workshop focused primarily on the functions, structures, roles, and responsibilities of election management bodies, while the second day drilled down into a more detailed discussion of related election administration and management topics.
