Elections in Kyrgyzstan: 2021 Early Presidential Election

On Sunday, January 10, Kyrgyzstan's voters will go to the polls for an early presidential election. Kyrgyzstan is in the midst of a political crisis, following the October 2020 parliamentary elections. Those elections resulted in mass protests, the invalidation of the election results and the resignation of President Sooronbai Jeenbekov and provoked significant legislative changes.

Last month, 60 members of Parliament also voted to hold a referendum on the preferred form of government on the same day as the early presidential election, a move that has been criticized by the international community.

To help you understand this important electoral process, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) provides Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on Elections in Kyrgyzstan: 2021 Presidential Election. IFES FAQs include:

  • What is the current form of government?
  • Who can observe during Election Day? How can they get accreditation?
  • What provisions are in place to guarantee equal access to the electoral process for persons with disabilities?
  • What are election authorities doing to safeguard the elections and voters during the COVID-19 pandemic?
