On Tuesday, November 3, American voters will elect the president, vice president, all 435 members of the House of Representatives, 35 members of the Senate and many state and local representatives. This year will also mark the country’s first general elections to take place during a pandemic since 1918 and these elections have the potential to shift the balance of power across the executive, legislative and judicial branches.

To help you understand this important electoral process, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) provides Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on Elections in the United States: 2020 General Elections. IFES FAQs include:

  • What is the United States' electoral system?
  • Is out-of-country voting allowed?
  • What are election authorities doing to safeguard the elections and voters during the COVID-19 pandemic?
  • When will official results be announced?
