Promoting the Political Empowerment of Youth with Disabilities in the Dominican Republic
On December 13, 27 Dominican youth with disabilities celebrated completing the Engaging a New Generation for Accessible Governance and Elections course at the Iberoamerican University (UNIBE) in Santo Domingo. The eight-week course on leadership and political processes was developed through collaboration between IFES, UNIBE and the Disability Alliance for Our Rights as part of the United States Agency for International Development-funded project, “Political Leadership of Youth with Disabilities in the Dominican Republic.”

New Program Will Engage Young Dominican Leaders with Disabilities
IFES announces its new program, in partnership with local disabled people’s organization Disability Alliance for Our Rights, “Promoting the Political Leadership of Youth with Disabilities in the Dominican Republic.” The program, made possible through the support of the United States Agency for International Development Disability Fund, will empower young persons with disabilities to make a difference in their communities by taking a more active role in political life.

Azerbaijan - a non-political social youth movement that fosters independent thinking and personal responsibility - two important characteristics for a thriving democracy.

Azerbaijan, FINAL REPORT, September 20, 2001 - September 19, 2003
This report reviews IFES efforts in Azerbaijan in support of the USAID project Civil Society Better Organized and Represented. This report describes how IFES worked to encourage increased professionalism among election officials, provided training to elected officials, encouraged broader citizen participation and increased awareness on democracy and democratic governance. The report also details civic education tools used and discusses the challenges encountered and lessons learned from IFES program.

This report describes the role municipalities play in the democratic process in Azerbaijan. The document begins by describing what municipalities are, the legal framework regarding municipalities and the structure of municipalities. “Democratic Leadership and the Citizenship Participation” is a discussion guidebook, available in Spanish, published in 1999 in the Dominican Republic by Vianela Diaz. The guidebook focuses on democratic leadership and citizen participation in the Dominican Republic and is intended to stimulate citizens’ involvement in the developing of a democratic society.

Plan de Educacion Con Estudiantes: Estado, Democracia y Ciudadania
“Education Plan for Students: the State, Democracy and Citizenship” is a youth informational workbook, available in Spanish, issued in 1999 by the “Citizen Participation” movement in the Dominican Republic. The workbook is comprised of six chapters and is meant to educate students on state, democracy and citizenship. The workbook focuses mostly on topics associated with political and public activities of the Dominican society, gives brief information about the three political powers and their attributes, the constitution and the citizens’ rights and responsibilities. Additionally it contains games and questions addressing the topics discussed in the workbook.
