20 Years of Democracy Camps: Building a Legacy of Youth Empowerment and Engagement in Kyrgyzstan
Kyrgyzstan is a burgeoning democracy full of young people. Over 45 percent of the population is below age 24, and over 30 percent is 14 or younger. Empowerment and Inclusion Through Youth Democracy Camps in Kyrgyzstan
IFES recently completed two annual summer democracy camps for youth ages 14-19 in Kyrgyzstan. This year’s camps build upon IFES’ legacy of more than 20 years of democracy camps, with over 80 camps conducted across the world, including 50 in Kyrgyzstan alone.

Creating Opportunities for Syrians to Shape Their Country’s Transition
Over the last several years, IFES has empowered Syrian women, youth, and marginalized groups to be part of a meaningful discourse over their country’s future. The Cycle of Corruption: Elections and the Abuse of State Resources
In many ways, elections are a central component in cycles of systemic corruption. IFES conducted a two-year research project to develop an assessment methodology to evaluate the effectiveness of a given country’s framework for addressing the abuse of state resources in election campaigns. The final product of this project is a detailed methodology that specifically examines three categories of state resources: state personnel; state funds and physical resources; and official government communications to the public.

Photo Gallery: 2017 Kyrgyz Republic Presidential Elections
On October 15, the Kyrgyz Republic held presidential elections. This was a historic vote; the first “regular” transition of power from a sitting president who has completed a constitutionally defined term of office to an elected successor. Prime Minister Sooronbay Jeenbekov, who is backed by outgoing President Almazbek Atambayev’s Social Democratic party, won the election with 54.3 percent of the about 1.7 million votes cast.

Youth Forums Offer Hope to Young Syrians
In 2016, IFES assisted Syrian organizations based in Gaziantep, Turkey to found Musharaka, a forum to encourage civic engagement of Syrians living in Gaziantep. Through the Musharaka Forum, IFES and its local partners have been able to establish a beacon of hope and optimism where few others have realized success and meaningful impact.

When IFES first encountered Azamat Karabotoev in the summer of 2013, he was a quiet teenager from the Talas region of Kyrgyzstan. Like over 2,000 other Kyrgyzstani youth before him, Azamat participated in an IFES Democracy Camp.

Elections in the Kyrgyz Republic: 2016 National Referendum and Local Elections
On December 11, Kyrgyz citizens will be voting in both local Kenesh (council) elections and on a national referendum. The local elections will be taking place as a result of President Almazbek Atambayev’s decree signed on October 10, which cited the fact that the terms of Kyrgyzstan’s local council deputies have expired. The national referendum will be held on the same day and aims to introduce amendments to the existing constitution.
