IFES Delegation Meets with Prime Minister of Georgia
An IFES delegation, led by President and CEO Bill Sweeney, met with Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhktadze on September 18, in Washington, D.C. Bakhtadze credited IFES for providing key technical assistance and developmental support to the election process, and underscored the important role this has played in the Central Election Commission’s preparations for the October 28 presidential election.

Memorandum of Understanding Strengthens Electoral Security Collaboration in Georgia
Georgia’s Central Election Commission (CEC) and Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) signed their third consecutive Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on electoral security on September 12, 2018. The MoU outlines how the CEC and MIA will cooperate to ensure security for the October 28, 2018, presidential election and reflects an institutionalized cooperation that had not existed prior to encouragement from IFES in 2016.

Celebrating International Day of Persons with Disabilities
The annual International Day of Persons with Disabilities, held on December 3, commemorates the human rights of persons with disabilities. The theme for this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities is “Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality.” In 2018, IFES partnered with disabled people’s organizations in every region of the world to develop new tools and approaches to empower people with disabilities to participate in political life.

International Day of Democracy: Celebrating Youth Achievements in Tunisia
In September 2018, IFES supported the celebration of the International Day of Democracy (IDD) in Tunisia. More than 180 Tunisian and international organizations organized their own IDD events, partnered with IFES or spread the word, and 2,430 people attended events throughout the country.

Celebrating International Day of Persons with Disabilities in Tunisia
To celebrate International Day of Persons with Disabilities in Tunisia, the IFES team joined a disability rights-focused Twitter campaign; organized a roundtable of government officials and disabled people’s and civil society organizations to discuss the barriers to political participation experienced by people with disabilities; began work on a sign language lexicon of electoral concepts; and partnered with a local radio station to broadcast three radio shows about issues faced by people with disabilities.
