Nepal Holds Phase One of First Local Elections in 20 Years
On May 14, 2017, Nepal held phase one of the first local elections in 20 years. More than 14 million voters across 75 districts were registered to elect 34,908 local-level legislative and executive representatives over two phases – the second phase of the election is scheduled for June 14.

IFES Launches POWER Program to Promote Women’s Political Participation in Sri Lanka
On October 11, Australia’s Ambassador for Women and Girls, Natasha Stott Despoja, launched an Australian-funded program to enhance women’s participation in local governance in Sri Lanka. Ambassador Stott Despoja was joined by two women political leaders – Member of Parliament (MP) Sudarshini Fernandopulle and Ms. Rosy Senanayake, a former MP. As part of the program, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) is working with the Election Commission of Sri Lanka, the Institute for Local Governance, and local partners to implement its “Promoting Women’s Electoral Representation” (POWER) project.

She Leads: Mobilizing Voters for the Myanmar 2015 General Elections
In Wun Kite village in Okkan township there is a buzz of excitement as villagers flock around the mock ballot box, learning about valid and invalid ballots and having a chance to practice casting their vote. Voter Education Concerts for Persons with Disabilities
On the crowded, noisy street of Pyay Road in Yangon’s Ahlone Township, locals regularly shop at nearby stores while cab drivers sit in standstill traffic. On October 30, eight days before Myanmar’s historic 2015 general elections, however, the atmosphere was a bit different, as passers-by were greeted with live music and voter education materials.
