The Cycle of Corruption: Elections and the Abuse of State Resources
In many ways, elections are a central component in cycles of systemic corruption. IFES conducted a two-year research project to develop an assessment methodology to evaluate the effectiveness of a given country’s framework for addressing the abuse of state resources in election campaigns. The final product of this project is a detailed methodology that specifically examines three categories of state resources: state personnel; state funds and physical resources; and official government communications to the public.

Promoting Regional Cooperation in Latin America to Fight Fake News
With the spread of fake news undermining electoral processes worldwide, it has become crucial for the success and security of elections that authorities learn how to identify and counter misinformation efforts. With this goal in mind, IFES organized two virtual peer-to-peer technical exchange sessions on media for Guatemala’s Supreme Electoral Tribunal in August 2018.

IFES Organizes Training on Countering Disinformation in Elections in Panama
On April 8-9, IFES implemented a workshop on “Electoral Coverage in an Era of Disinformation” in Panama City for 48 journalists, candidate representatives and Electoral Tribunal (TE) staff. In September 2019, IFES Manatt Fellow Tinashe Hofisi presented on presidential election petitions in Kenya, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe at the 14th Annual Symposium of the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa. He highlighted the unique jurisdictional tools available to apex courts in adjudication of presidential elections and their effect on judicial outcomes.
