Selma Votes in Tunisia
As part of an effort to enfranchise illiterate women residing in rural areas to hold their government accountable, IFES partnered with USAID and the Tunisian Mediterranean Center to train and deploy women ambassadors in governorates with the highest illiteracy rates. These civic education ambassadors then encouraged women like Selma Sbissi, featured in a USAID video, to register and vote in the 2018 municipal elections.

Manatt Fellow Presents on Election Dispute Resolution in Africa
In September 2019, IFES Manatt Fellow Tinashe Hofisi presented on presidential election petitions in Kenya, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe at the 14th Annual Symposium of the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa. He highlighted the unique jurisdictional tools available to apex courts in adjudication of presidential elections and their effect on judicial outcomes.

Haitian Delegation Participates in Election Observation Exchange Mission to Guatemala
From June 13-17, a delegation from Haiti’s Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) participated in an election observation and exchange mission organized by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal of Guatemala around the country’s June 16 general elections. Since 2007 when the United Nations General Assembly designated September 15th as the International Day of Democracy, organizations – governmental and nongovernmental – have joined with others to commemorate the importance of promoting and upholding principles of democracy. On this day, we lift our voices with other like-minded supporters of human freedom and dignity to raise public awareness about the power that citizens have to determine by whom, and how, they are governed.
