On June 1, the Election Commission of Sri Lanka (EC) held a youth event at the University of Colombo as part of Sri Lanka’s annual National Voters’ Day celebration. IFES was proud to support the event as part of its U.S. Agency for International Development-funded program in Sri Lanka, which is carried out at the invitation of the EC.

Celebrating IFES’ 30th Anniversary in Sri Lanka and Nepal
On January 27, IFES held an anniversary reception in Kathmandu, Nepal, where Sweeney welcomed current and former members of the Election Commission of Nepal, civil society, and representatives of the donor community. IFES has worked in Nepal since 1999, a period that included the 2006 end to a decade-long civil war, groundbreaking Constituent Assembly elections in 2008 and 2013, and the establishment of a new constitution in 2015.

IFES Launches POWER Program to Promote Women’s Political Participation in Sri Lanka
On October 11, Australia’s Ambassador for Women and Girls, Natasha Stott Despoja, launched an Australian-funded program to enhance women’s participation in local governance in Sri Lanka. Ambassador Stott Despoja was joined by two women political leaders – Member of Parliament (MP) Sudarshini Fernandopulle and Ms. Rosy Senanayake, a former MP. As part of the program, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) is working with the Election Commission of Sri Lanka, the Institute for Local Governance, and local partners to implement its “Promoting Women’s Electoral Representation” (POWER) project.
